Sony has just launched it’s new mid-range Android smartphone, the Sony Xperia SP in India at a price of Rs.27,490. Announced last month alongside the Sony Xperia L, the Sony Xperia SP will take-on the likes of LG Optimus G, Samsung Galaxy S3 and even the HTC One X/One X+ , as both the smartphones have got a huge price cut recently.
Coming to the specifications,
the smartphone comes with a 4.6-inch HD (720p) display which features
Sony’s Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 technology and is protected by a Gorilla
Glass. The Xperia SP is powered by a 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 processor
paired with 1GB of RAM and Adreno 320 GPU, which isn’t as impressive as
some of the other smartphone available at this price point.
The Sony Xperia SP runs on Android 4.1.1
Jelly Bean with Sony’s Timescape UI on top. The smartphone comes with
8GB of internal storage, which again is a bit disappointing as other
devices in this segment offer as high as 64GB (HTC One X+) of internal
storage. However, the storage can can be expanded by up to 32GB using a
micro-SD card.
Sony is betting big on the 8 megapixel
camera on the Xperia SL, which features the Exmor RS sensor and
promises stunning image quality. Also, the smartphone gets a transparent
strip which lights up in different colors based on music
and notifications  just like we’ve seen on previous generation of smartphones from Sony.
Powering the entire package is a 2,370mAh battery and the connectivity options on the Sony Xperia
SP include Wi-Fi, Blueooth, NFC and GPS with Glonass. The smartphone
will be available in Black and White color options and will hit retail
stores in just a week’s time.
With many better specd now available at
this price point, we think that the Sony Xperia SP doesn’t really makes
sense, as even the lower priced devices like the HTC One (post the price
cut) offer a quad-core CPU. Also, if you have a little more to spend,
you can consider the LG Optimus G or the HTC One X+, which are surely miles ahead of the Sony Xperia SP in terms of on-paper specifications.
