Details Of Samsung's Tizen OS based Smartphones Surface.

2013 is a big year for mobile operating systems, as many new mobile OS’s like Ubuntu and Firefox are scheduled to hit the market. Another one of such long-rumored OS, is Samsung’s Tizen, which the South-Korean smartphone maker has worked on since a long time now. The company, which heavily relies on Android at present, looks to offer a range of devices, and Tizen has a huge role to play on that front.

While we are yet to see an official announcement about the new devices running on the upcoming OS, a new rumor hints that Samsung will be releasing two models initially, one of which will be a high-end device, while the other one will be a mid-range device.

The high-end Tizen-running smartphone is currently codenamed as GT-I8805 Redwood, while the mid-range device goes by the codename GT-I8800 Melius.

The two upcoming smart phones were leaked over Samsung’s Tizen Store, via PDFs posted for developers, and show that the Samsung Redwood will come with 4G LTE connectivity, while the Samsung Melius will feature 3G connectivity. Both the smart phones will be running on Tizen 2.1 Magnolia OS, and will launch sometime in August or September this year.
Both the smart phones are expected to go on sale in the United States first, before hitting the European and Asian markets.

Earlier, in an interview, Samsung VP Lee Young Hee had said,

The Tizen phone will be out in August or September, and this will be in the high-end category. The device will be the best product equipped with the best specifications.

Samsung, which is currently the world’s largest maker of Android-based smartphones and tablets, would be more keen on a successful launch of Tizen based devices as it will look to lessen it’s reliance on Google’s mobile operating system. Some analysts also believe that Samsung has been quite  uncomfortable with Google’s acquisition of Motorola, which could in future, weaken it’s position as the top Android smartphone maker.

The upcoming smartphone operating system Tizen, is a Linux-based OS which is being jointly developed by Samsung and Intel, and came into existence after Intel’s unsuccessful attempt of developing the MeeGo operating system along with Nokia. Linux foundation is currently overseeing the operating system  which is expected to be more open-source as compared to it’s rivals.

Back in the day, it was also reported that NTT Docomo, Japan’s largest telecom company, had joined forces with Samsung and is expected to launch a Tizen-running device as well.
